When Sleep Changes After Sleep Training: What Happened?

Have you ever felt like sleep was finally improving, only to notice that a few weeks or months later, things suddenly changed again? You may find yourself wondering, “What happened?” or “Did we do something wrong?”

The truth is that sleep is always changing. Regressions and temporary setbacks are common, and they don’t mean you’ve failed or that your previous progress has disappeared.

What Can Cause Sleep Changes?

Many factors can affect your child’s sleep, including:

  • Developmental milestones, such as crawling, walking, or learning new skills

  • Changing sleep needs as your child grows

  • Separation anxiety

  • Illness or congestion

  • Teething

  • Travel or changes in environment

  • A new sibling or changes in family routines

  • Shifts in naps or bedtime

  • Needing new wake windows

  • A sleep regression or developmental transition

A newborn, 4-month-old, 8-month-old, 15-month-old, 24-month-old, and preschooler all have different sleep needs. As your child grows, the routine that worked well a few months ago may need gentle adjustments.

Preschoolers have different sleep needs, too. Their growing independence, imagination, emotions, and changing routines can all influence sleep.

A Few Helpful Tips

Before making major changes, try tracking your child’s sleep for three days. Write down:

  • Wake-up and bedtime

  • Nap times and lengths

  • Night wakings

  • Feeding times

  • Your child’s mood and energy levels

  • How long they comfortably stay awake

A short sleep log can help you identify patterns and determine whether your child may need adjusted wake windows, a different nap schedule, or additional support during a developmental transition.

It can also be helpful to look at the bigger picture. Is your child overtired, undertired, going through a milestone, or needing more connection and reassurance? Small, responsive adjustments may be all that’s needed.
