Those Dreaded 2 a.m. Wake-Ups: Understanding Frequent Night Waking

It’s 2 a.m. Your baby or toddler is awake again—and you’re wondering how much longer this can continue. Frequent night waking can be exhausting, especially when you are already running on very little sleep.

Night waking is common for babies and toddlers, but that does not make it easy. Waking can be connected to development, hunger, discomfort, illness, changing sleep needs, a busy day, separation needs, or the way your child has learned to settle to sleep.

Start with curiosity, not judgment

Before changing anything, notice the pattern. When does your child wake? How do they settle? Are they feeding, being rocked, held, or supported back to sleep? What happens at bedtime? Looking at the whole picture can help you choose gentle, realistic next steps.

Gentle ways to support frequent wakes

A calm, predictable bedtime routine can help your child know what to expect. Keep the sleep environment comfortable, respond consistently, and offer connection when your child wakes. Depending on your child’s age and needs, you may gently adjust one support at a time rather than trying to change everything at once.

For some families, this may mean gradually reducing the amount of help needed to settle. For others, it may mean first working on bedtime, protecting naps, or addressing discomfort and overstimulation. Gentle sleep support is not about leaving a child to cry alone.

You are not failing

If your baby or toddler wakes frequently, you are not doing anything wrong. Sleep changes over time, and every family needs an approach that fits their values, circumstances, and child.

I offer compassionate, attachment-focused sleep support for babies and toddlers. Together, we can look at what is happening and create a plan that supports healthy sleep while protecting connection and emotional safety.
