Dream Feeds Explained: What They Are, Who They Help, and When to Skip Them

A dream feed is an optional feed you offer before you go to bed—ideally while your baby stays mostly asleep. For some families, it can shift one waking earlier and support a longer first stretch of sleep.

What a dream feed is (and isn’t)

  • A parent-led feed offered late evening.

  • Usually done with minimal stimulation.

  • Not a guarantee—and not required for good sleep.

  • Not the same as feeding on demand when baby wakes.

Who it may help

  • Babies who reliably wake for a feed shortly after you go to bed.

  • Families who want to shift that waking earlier.

  • Babies who transfer well and resettle easily.

When to skip it

  • If it consistently wakes your baby fully.

  • If it increases night waking.

  • If it adds stress or feels unsustainable.
